Sinterklaas is a very old Dutch tradition. It’s about a very old man with a long white beard who celebrates his birthday by presenting all the dutch kids with little presents in their shoe while they’re asleep. The real birthday party is being hold every evening of December the 5th. That’ll be the night when big piles of presents will be left by every house by Zwarte Piet, the sidekick of Sinterklaas, for the kids, their parents and grandparents celebrating with them.
Roderik and I went interviewing people on the streets of Arnhem about the tradition Sinterklaas. We wanted to check their opinion about the fact that Sinterklaas becomes more and more a commercial event rather than the tradition it once was. I was rather happy to discover that most people still think of Sinterklaas as a real tradition.
